Before I Fall is a 2017 American teen drama film directed by Ry Russo-Young and written by Maria Maggenti, based on the 2010 novel of name by Lauren Oliver. The film stars Zoey Deutch, Halston Sage, Logan Miller, Kian Lawley, Jennifer Beals, Diego Boneta and Elena Kampouris, Director Russo- Young and writter  Lauren Oliver, all beautiful young promises of the new cinema industry.

The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $14 million worldwide against its $5 million budget. According to IndieWire, it was one of the highest grossing independent films of 2017.

Movie Review:

After seeing this movie, It got my attention for not being the classic teenager movie, it does have a deep meaning and very interesting point of view. The movie takes a similar pattern as Groundhog Day, just this time has a twist, as emulating our life routine. Are you tire of having your life always doing the same stuff over and over? In the beginning of the movie she has a classic and pretty normal teen life, enjoying jokes and having fun with her other three best friends, Sam also has a popular boyfriend and carefree relationship with her parents. At the end of the day she has a car accident along with her friends, terrify she wakes up in her room, thinking this was just a horrible nightmare, she feels as the day goes by a feeling of Deja Vu. However at the third day, she notices she has been stock on the same day, over and over, then she realised that every action, she made has also a consequences, she feels «everything is connected» as days passed she noticed she and her friends are constant bullying a school girl named Juliet and until she doesn’t save her, Samantha will be having the same day over and over.

One day Sam tired of not being free from this enigmatic drama decided to be a bad girl dress provocative, and treat everyone careless, Even so, she still not being free of her path. The next day she awakes, she is determined to be a better person, making everyone around her, a much happier life and relationship, looking after her family, friends and even helping Juliet to feel better, « If this will be my last day I wanted to live a worthy day for everyone» she said,  Even her mum remark «focus on one good thing and do something good»  during the movie we constantly see, on her best friend’s room a signboard written «Become Who you are».

At the end of the movie she is not longer scared, confuse or angry, she finally understand the true meaning of life, what it needs to happen, and start to appreciate life as it comes, value everyone with respect, she realise life is not just about receiving is also about giving, a very touching movie, that shows and interesting perspective of life and true meaning of love.

The plot of the movie

Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch) seems to have it all: popularity, a loving boyfriend (Kian Lawley) and a seemingly perfect future. Everything changes in the blink of an eye when she dies in a car crash but then magically wakes up to find herself reliving the same day over and over again. As Samantha tries to untangle the mystery of a life derailed, she must also unravel the secrets of the people closest to her and discover how the power of a single day can make a difference.

The Director Russo-Young

American independent filmmaker. Her films Nobody Walks and You Won’t Miss Me appeared at the Sundance Film Festival. Nobody Walks won a special jury prize at Sundance and was released by Magnolia Pictures in 2014, and You Won’t Miss Me won a Gotham Award for Best Film Not Playing at a Theatre Near You. Her first feature, Orphans, won a special jury prize at South by Southwest in 2007. Her short film Marion won several awards including a Silver Hugo for Best Experimental Short at the Chicago Independent Film Festival. She also appeared in Joe Swanberg’s Hannah Takes the Stairs and The Color Wheel. In 2015, Russo-Young won a Creative Capital award for her film, The Family Movie.Russo-Young directed Before I Fall, based on the book by Lauren Oliver. The film stars Zoey Deutch, Halston Sage, Logan Miller, and Jennifer Beals, and was released by Open Road Films in 2017. Before I Fall premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017 and also had a special screening at the Next Wave 17 Toronto International Film Festival in February 2017

The author of the book Before I Fall, by Lauren Oliver 

The author of the YA bestselling novels Before I Fall, Panic, and Vanishing Girls and the Delirium trilogy: Delirium, Pandemonium, and Requiem, which have been translated into more than thirty languages and are New York Times and international bestselling novels. She is also the author of three novels for middle-grade readers: The Spindlers; Liesl & Po, which was an E. B. White Read Aloud Award nominee; and Curiosity House: The Shrunken Head, co-written with H. C. Chester, and a novel for adults, Rooms. A graduate of the University of Chicago and NYU’s MFA program, Lauren Oliver is also the co-founder of the boutique literary development company Paper Lantern Lit.

Si no despierto

Llega a la pantalla grande una nueva película que muestra casos de bullying, pero con una perspectiva diferente. Se trata del filme «Si no despierto», dirigida por Ry Russo-Young y basada en la novela homónima de Lauren Oliver, el cual ahonda en el acoso escolar desde el punto de vista del victimario.

La cinta sigue la historia de Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch), una de las jóvenes más populares de su colegio y que goza de una vida perfecta. Todo cambia cuando el viernes 12 de febrero se convierte en su último día, ya que cada vez que despierta, vuelve a vivir las mismas 24 horas. Hasta que descubre que de ella depende hacer pequeños cambios en su vida que harán grandes diferencias para el resto.

Comentario de la pelicula

La Pélicula está inspirada en la famosa historia «El día de la marmota», Samanta es una estudiante que durante el día previo a San Valentin, tiene un accidente de coche junto a sus compañeras de clase, sin embargo ella a los pocos segundos, despierta en su cama, confusa después de esta pesadilla, continua su dia, pero al trancurrir el día se ve envuelta en un Déjà vu (significa “ya visto”. El concepto describe la sensación que experimenta una persona al pensar que ya ha vivido con anterioridad un hecho que, en realidad, es novedosose) así vemos como se le repide el mismo día que sueño, al tercer día se da cuenta que esta atrapada en el mismo día, confundida intenta todo lo posible por evitar el accidente, salvar su vida y la de sus amigas, sin embargo se da cuenta que es en vano.

Sam, comienza analizar cuales pueden ser las causas, a media que su dias se repiden ella comienza a tener siertos cambios personales, empieza a ver y valorar a su familia, a conectarse mas con su madre, a cuidar a su hermana pequeña, ver que en realidad su novio no es quien realmente la ama si no su amigo de la infancia.

Sam también observa que ella no ha sido justa con sus otras compañeras  de curso, pues las ha menos preciado, hasta el punto de ser participe de un tremendo bullying que acabará con la vida de Juliet, quien conectada por su suicidio es la causante de la muerte de sus amigas. Así pues, Samantha se da cuenta que todas nuetras acciones están conectadas y para evitar tal fatalidad debe no solo cambiar el día, sino su conducta, es interesante ver que incluso cuando ella se revela e intenta ser más agreciba no es la solución, decidiendo hacer el bien, ayudar a sus seres queridos y los más proximos a ella, para terner una vida más feliz y plena.

Una pélicula con un mensaje profundo que nos ayuda a recordar que nuestra rutina puede ser cambiada si nosotros lo deseamos y que nuestra vida puede mejorar si tomamos la riendas de nuestras vidas.

La Directora de la Pélicula Russo- Young

Según explicó la Directora, su rol en «Si no despierto» lo preparó acudiendo a películas como «El día de la marmota», «Al filo del mañana» y «¡Qué bello es vivir!», en las que sus protagonistas repiten una y otra vez el mismo día, además de cintas de adolescentes, como «Chicas pesadas». «Es fiel al libro, la mayoría de las veces», aseguró Russo-Young. «Maria Maggenti hizo la adaptación e hizo un gran trabajo enfocando la historia. Aunque siempre vas a encontrar más en los libros que en las película», agregó. Por su parte, Deutch aseguró que lo que más le gustó del libro fue «que te hace sentir como si estuvieras en la cabeza de Sam. Eso puede ser algo difícil de trasladar a la pantalla, porque los libros y las películas son diferentes».

Sinopsis de la pélicula

La película, para aquellos que no sepan la sinopsis, tratará de una chica adolescente que lo tiene todo: una belleza deslumbrante, popularidad de sobra y un novio perfecto. Sin embargo, el 12 de febrero tiene un accidente de coche y algo extraño ocurre, pues de repente es obligada a volver a repetir el mismo día una y otra vez, hasta que se dé cuenta de aquello que tiene que cambiar para que la pesadilla termine. Mientras se balancea entre la vida y la muerte.

Cuando Sam desenreda el misterio, descubre el valor verdadero de todo lo que está en peligro de perder.

La autora del libro Si no despierto Lauren Oliver

Escritora americana, Lauren Oliver estudió Filosofía y Literatura en la Universidad de Chicago, aunque ya desde la enseñanza secundaria mostró sus intenciones de dedicarse a la literatura.
Oliver es conocida para el gran público por sus novelas dedicadas a jóvenes adultos en las que introduce grandes elementos de romance, terror y fantasía, con especial atención a una ambientación distópica.
Su obra más importante a nivel internacional es, seguramente, Si no despierto, que será adaptada al cine próximamente. Actualmente, Oliver se dedica por completo a la literatura mientras desarrolla la serie de novelas Delirium, aunque también ha publicado narrativa para adultos, como el libro Rooms (2014) todavía inédito en castellano.
