Following up on its announcement from last week, National Geographic just made its new climate change documentary Before the Flood available for free for a limited window of time.
The docufilm starring Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio is currently streaming on YouTube, Twitter and a few other platforms, where it will be available entirely free of charge until November 6.

About the film
Before the Flood is a 2016 documentary film about climate change directed by Fisher Stevens. The film was produced by a collaboration between Stevens, Leonardo DiCaprio, James Packer, Brett Ratner, Trevor Davidoski, and Jennifer Davisson Killoran. Martin Scorsese is an executive producer.
As revealed by DiCaprio on September 9, 2016 at the Toronto International Film Festival, the documentary has debuted October 30, 2016 on the National Geographic Channel. As part of National Geographic’s commitment to covering climate change, the documentary was made widely available and free of charge on various platforms.

Before The Flood is the product of an incredible three-year journey that took place with my co-creator and director Fisher Stevens.
We went to every corner of the globe to document the devastating impacts of climate change and questioned humanity’s ability to reverse what may be the most catastrophic problem mankind has ever faced.
There was a lot to take on. All that we witnessed on this journey shows us that our world’s climate is incredibly interconnected and that it is at urgent breaking point.
We wanted to create a film that gave people a sense of urgency, that made them understand what particular things are going to solve this problem. We bring up the issue of a carbon tax, for example, which I haven’t seen in a lot of documentaries. Basically, sway a capitalist economy to try to invest in renewables, to bring less money and subsidies out of oil companies. These are the things that are really going to make a massive difference. We need to use our vote …
We cannot afford to have political leaders out there that do not believe in modern science or the scientific method or empirical truths …

He visto el documental, y por ello mi gran motivación, para hacer llegar este mensaje a muchas personas, y así invitarlos a ver este documental, por que todos somos vecinos, todos compartimos la misma casa, llamada Planeta tierra.

I’ve seen the documentary, and therefore my great motivation, to bring this message to many people as possible, therefore I would like to invite you, to see this documentary, because we are all neighbors, we all share the same house, called Planet Earth.

Comentario del documental
El documental está realizado por National geographic, está muy bien hecho, me gusta por que es muy fácil de entender y te va guiando de los cambios climáticos que están ocurriendo en la actualidad en nuestro planeta.
El documental comienza con la voz de Leo Dicaprio y con el cuadro el Jardín de las delicias que simboliza el paraíso en que vivíamos, así como en el final del cuadro lo que podría ocurrir, si no ayudamos a salvar al mundo.
El documental muestra el viaje que hace Dicaprio por el mundo desde Los Estados Unidos , cruzando por China, india, indonesia, Norte de Canadá , el polo ártico, Ushuaia Argentina, desde la perfectiva de Leo DiCaprio es interesante por que, es un personaje como todos nosotros, que va aprendiendo al trascurso de su viaje, los acontecimientos, recogiendo testimonios de los sucedido por el mundo.
Él mismo, va teniendo un cambio completo, de la perspectiva del cambio climático, si escuchan, el discurso de Las Naciones Unidas, verán como él, va analizando, estos dramáticos cambios climáticos.
El vídeo termina, con la firma del acuerdo de París, donde los países aceptan el acuerdo y a colaborar con esta gran obra.
Entre los entrevistados, se encuentran en el vídeo, el secretario de las Naciones Unidas Ban Ki-moon, el presidente de los Estados Unidos Barack Obamay su santidad el Papa Francisco,además de investigadores de la NASA de primera línea, el director general de Tesla, Elon Musk. Conservacionistas forestales, científicos, líderes comunitarios y activistas que trabajan para salvar el mundo.
Dirigido y producido por el ganador del Óscar, Fisher Stevens; conducido por Leonardo DiCaprio, activista por el medio ambiente y mensajero de la Paz de la ONU, y con la producción ejecutiva de Martin Scorsese, Antes del Diluvio pone en primer plano el debate sobre el cambio climático.
“Fisher y yo quisimos hacer una película para educar a la gente de todo el mundo sobre el problema urgente que es el cambio climático y para inspirarla a que sea parte de la solución”, expresó Di Caprio.
Por su parte Stevens agregó: “El cambio climático es real, y estamos sintiendo sus efectos cada vez más. Es hora de que dejemos de discutir su existencia y que hagamos todo lo posible por llevar el problema a un primer plano en la mente de la gente de manera que se tomen medidas reales para combatirlo”.
Antes del Diluvio presenta un relato informativo y envolvente sobre los dramáticos sucesos que ya están ocurriendo en todo el mundo debido al cambio climático, y las acciones que tanto los individuos como la sociedad pueden ayudar a prevenir una catastrófica disrupción de la vida en nuestro planeta.
DiCaprio entrevista a individuos de todos los sectores de la sociedad que brindan opiniones con vehemencia y pragmatismo sobre lo que se debe hacer hoy −y en el futuro− para transformar los sistemas económicos y políticos a instituciones favorables al medio ambiente.

DiCaprio, a United Nations Messenger of Peace, told that organization: «A massive change is required right now. One that leads to a new collective consciousness. A new collective evolution of the human race, inspired and enabled by a sense of urgency from all of you.»
In the documentary, DiCaprio steps into the role of an intrepid environmental investigator, tackling the negative effects of climate change and seeking a viable way to prevent the demise of endangered species, ecosystems and native communities across the planet.
In the process, the actor interrogates a slew of prominent researchers, innovators and public figures including President Barack Obama and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
DiCaprio is taking his film to the White House, where it will be shown in a special screening for the country’s leaders. He will also speak with President Barack Obama about ongoing efforts to address climate change.
Leonardo DiCaprio visited Pope Francis at the Vatican , and discussed their shared concern over the environment and gave the pontiff a check from his charitable foundation.
‘Your Holiness, thank you for granting me this private audience with you,’ DiCaprio said in Italian as he arrived in the Apostolic Palace and kissed the pope’s ring.
Later, in English, DiCaprio offered Francis a book of works by the 15th-century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, and showed him the reproduction of Bosch’s ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ that had hung over his crib as a child.

The Garden of Earthly Delights
At the opening of the video, it start with the painting of The Garden of Earthly Delights is the modern title given to a triptych painted by the Early Netherlandish master Hieronymus Bosch, housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1939. It dates from between 1490 and 1510, when Bosch was between about 40 and 60 years old, and is his best-known and most ambitious surviving work.
The triptych is painted in oil on oak and is composed of a square middle panel flanked by two other oak rectangular wings that close over the center as shutters. The outer wings, when folded, show a grisaille painting of the earth during the biblical narrative of Creation. The three scenes of the inner triptych are probably (but not necessarily) intended to be read chronologically from left to right. The left panel depicts God presenting Eve to Adam, the central panel is a broad panorama of socially engaged nude figures, fantastical animals, oversized fruit and hybrid stone formations. The right panel is a hellscape and portrays the torments of damnation.
Art historians frequently interpret the painting as a didactic warning on the perils of life’s temptations. However, the intricacy of its symbolism, particularly that of the central panel, has led to a wide range of scholarly interpretations over the centuries. Twentieth-century art historians are divided as to whether the triptych’s central panel is a moral warning or a panorama of paradise lost. American writer Peter S. Beagle describes it as an «erotic derangement that turns us all into voyeurs, a place filled with the intoxicating air of perfect liberty».
La película comienza con una majestuosa pintura El jardín de las delicias he aquí los misterios de la pintura.
El jardín de las delicias es una de las obras más conocidas del pintor holandés Jheronimus Bosch (el Bosco). Se trata de un tríptico pintado al óleo sobre tabla de 220 x 389 cm, compuesto de una tabla central de 220 x 195 cm y dos laterales de 220 x 97 cada una (pintadas en sus dos lados) que se pueden cerrar sobre aquella.
Obra de contenido simbólico, sobre el que se han ofrecido variadas interpretaciones, como El carro de heno o la Mesa de los pecados capitales, obras todas ellas adquiridas por el rey Felipe II de España, gran admirador del pintor, y guardadas durante algún tiempo en el Monasterio de El Escorial, obedece a una intención moralizante y satírica que iba a hacer fortuna ya en su época como demuestra la temprana aparición de copistas e imitadores.

What is Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement (French: L’accord de Paris) is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gases emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020. The language of the agreement was negotiated by representatives of 195 countries at the 21st Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCCin Paris and adopted by consensus on 12 December 2015. It was opened for signature on 22 April 2016 (Earth Day) in a ceremony in New York City. As of October 2016, 192 UNFCCC members have signed the treaty, 92 of which have ratified it. After the European Union ratified the agreement in October 2016, there were enough countries that had ratified the agreement that produce enough of the world’s greenhouse gases for the agreement to enter into force. The agreement will take effect on 4 November 2016.
The head of the Paris Conference, France’s foreign minister Laurent Fabius, said this «ambitious and balanced» plan is a «historic turning point» in the goal of reducing global warming.

Aim
The aim of the convention is described in Article 2, «enhancing the implementation» of the UNFCCC through:
- «(a) Holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change;
- (b) Increasing the ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change and foster climate resilience and low greenhouse gas emissions development, in a manner that does not threaten food production;
- (c) Making finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development.»
Countries furthermore aim to reach «global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible». The third aim (point c) can be seem as a reference to fossil fuel divestment.
The Paris deal is the world’s first comprehensive climate agreement
Que es el Acuerdo de París (2015)
El Acuerdo de París es un acuerdo dentro del marco de la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático que establece medidas para la reducción de las emisiones de Gases de Efecto Invernadero (GEI) a través de la mitigación, adaptación y resiliencia de los ecosistemas a efectos del Calentamiento Global, su aplicabilidad sería para el año 2020, cuando finaliza la vigencia del Protocolo de Kioto. El acuerdo fue negociado durante la XXI Conferencia sobre Cambio Climático (COP 21) por los 195 países miembros y adoptado el 12 de diciembre de 2015, pero, debido a que «El Acuerdo de París» ha sido ratificado por más de 55 Partes que suman más del 55 por ciento de las emisiones globales de gases de efecto invernadero; entrará en vigor el próximo 4 de noviembre de 2016.
Ha sido publicado en los idiomas árabe, chino, español, francés, inglés y ruso.
Puntos principales
El Acuerdo de París tiende un puente entre las políticas actuales y la neutralidad climática que debe existir a finales del siglo.
Mitigación: reducir las emisiones
Los Gobiernos acordaron:
- el objetivo a largo plazo de mantener el aumento de la temperatura media mundial muy por debajo de 2 °C sobre los niveles preindustriales
- limitar el aumento a 1,5 °C, lo que reducirá considerablemente los riesgos y el impacto del cambio climático
- que las emisiones globales alcancen su nivel máximo cuanto antes, si bien reconocen que en los países en desarrollo el proceso será más largo
- aplicar después rápidas reducciones basadas en los mejores criterios científicos disponibles.
Antes y durante la conferencia de París, los países presentaron sus planes generales nacionales de acción contra el cambio climático (CPDN). Aunque los planes no bastarán para mantener el calentamiento global por debajo de 2 °C, el Acuerdo señala el camino para llegar a esa meta.
