The Venice Film Festival or Venice International Film Festival (Italian: Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica della Biennale di Venezia, «International Exhibition of Cinematographic Art of the Venice Biennale»), founded in 1932, is the oldest film festival in the world and one of the » Big Three» film festivals alongside the Cannes Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival.

The film festival is part of the Venice Biennale, which was founded by the Venetian City Council in 1895. Today, the Biennale includes a range of separate events including: the International Art Exhibition; the International Festival of Contemporary Music; the International Theatre Festival; the International Architecture Exhibition; the International Festival of Contemporary Dance; the International Kids’ Carnival; and the annual Venice Film Festival, which is arguably the best-known of all the events.

The film festival has since taken place in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, Venice, Italy. Screenings take place in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi and in other venues nearby. Since its inception the Film Festival has become the most prestigious international film festival in the world.

The 73rd Festival  is scheduled to be held from 31 August to 10 September 2016.

El Festival de Venecia (en italiano, Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica di Venezia) es un festival cinematograficoitaliano que se lleva a cabo cada año en el Palazzo del Cinema de Venecia. Es uno de los festivales de cine más prestigiosos del mundo.

Aunque el festival es anual, está enmarcado dentro de lo que se conoce como la Bienal de Venecia . Desde hace más de un siglo una de las instituciones culturales más importantes del mundo (fundada en 1895).

El máximo galardón del Festival es el Leon de Oro (Leone d’Oro), que el jurado concede a la mejor película a concurso. El jurado también concede el Leon de Plata (Leone d’Argento) al mejor director y el Gran Premio del Jurado. En el apartado de interpretación, el jurado otorga la Copa Volpi al mejor actor y a la mejor actriz. En cuatro ediciones, concretamente entre 1993 y 1996, se otorgó la Copa Volpi tanto al mejor actor de reparto como a la mejor actriz de reparto (en este último caso, solo se otorgó hasta 1995). Finalmente, la organización del Festival otorga cada año uno o varios Leones de Oro  especiales a distintas personalidades del mundo del cine, reconociendo su aportación al mundo cinematográfico.

La sede principal del Festival se encuentra en el Palazzo del Cinema, donde se presentan las películas a competición. En su interior se encuentran la «Sala Grande«, con capacidad para 1078 personas, y la «Sala Volpi«, con capacidad para 171 personas. Otras localizaciones del Festival son el Palazzo del Casinò, donde se encuentra la «Sala Perla» con capacidad para 450 personas; el Palagalileo, con capacidad para 1299 personas, y que suele ser usado para los pases de películas para la prensa; elPalabiennale, que es el recinto con mayor capacidad (1700 localidades) y que se monta exclusivamente para el Festival; y la Sala Astra, que está reservada para visitantes acreditados y con capacidad para 225 personas.

El festival de Venecia es un festival de categoría «A» acreditado por la Federacion (International de Asociaciones de Productores Cinematogradicos (FIAPF) junto con los festivales de Berlin, Cannes, San Sebastian, entre muchos otros (ver el enlace a la FIAPF para la lista completa). Además es el festival de cine más antiguo del mundo (primera edición en 1932).
