El 7 de agosto de 1974, un joven funámbulista francés llamado Philippe Petit coloco un cable ilegal entre las dos desaparecidas torres gemelas del World Trade Center  y lo paso andando ante el estupor de miles de personas. Nada más terminar fue arrestado por cometer el “crimen artístico del siglo”, pero según él, y como titularía años después su biografía, en aquel momento “alcanzó las nubes”.

Nacido en Nemours, Francia, el 13 de agosto de 1949, Petit ejerció de mimo y mago antes de descubrir su facilidad para el equilibrio.

Comenzó a realizar entrenamientos especiales con cañones de aire para simular el viento a esa altura, y construyó un modelo a escala de lo que sería su objetivo y obsesión: Las torres gemelas del World Trade Center.

In his teens, Petit learned about the World Trade Center construction project in New York City. He read about the project’s proposed twin towers while waiting in a dentist’s office, and spent years planning to walk a high wire between the two buildings. Before he went to New York, however, Petit took on several other amazing tightrope challenges. In 1971, he traveled between the towers of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on a wire. Two years later, he crossed the Sydney Harbor Bridge in Australia. In each instance, he had the help of friends in pulling off these impressive stunts.

Se hizo pasar por periodista y falsificó tarjetas de contratistas para él y sus colaboradores y así  tener libre acceso a los dos edificios y a su azotea, quedando incluso encerrado en el edificio por la noche. Estudió la seguridad de las torres exhaustivamente y cada uno de los problemas que podían surgir. Conoció en persona al   presidente del World Trade Center, Guy F.

In late 1973, Petit traveled to New York City. He spent months studying the World Trade Center’s twin towers. To visit the site, Petit assumed a number of disguises, including being a reporter and a construction worker. He took photographs and made measurements. With help of friends, Petit started hiding his equipment in the towers in early August. He and accomplices then tucked themselves away in the buildings on August 6, 1974, to prepare for the big event.

Con un simple arco y una flecha pasó un primer cable guía de una azotea a otra, mientras un colaborador la tensaba, luego se pasó otro definitivo de más de 200 kg de peso. Petit, con un contrapeso de 8metros de largo y  25 kg, tenía delante su sueño.

In the morning of August 7, Petit stepped onto the tightrope, which was suspended between the two towers. A crowd of thousands soon gathered to watch the man on the wire more than 1,300 feet above them. For 45 minutes, Petit practically danced on the thin metal line. He was arrested for his efforts, and was ordered to give a performance in Central Park as his sentence. His impressive feat was later featured in the 2008 documentary Man on Wire.

A las 7:15 de la mañana de ese 7 de agosto de 1974, Petite comenzó a caminar sobre un cable de acero desde la Torre sur, aun sin terminar de ser construida, a 415 metros de altura

“A mis pies un cable. Nada más. Mis ojos captan lo que se levanta frente a mí: la parte superior de la torre norte”, escribe después en sus memorias “Alcanzar las nubes”,  “Este es probablemente el final de mi vida, caminar sobre ese cable. Y, por otra parte, algo a lo que no me podría resistir, ni haría ningún esfuerzo por resistirme, ese cable me llama. Y la muerte está muy cercana”.

With his World Trade Center walk, Petit helped people warm up to the then-maligned building development. Though the site’s famous twin towers fell during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, Petit said he was pleased about the recent construction of new towers at the World Trade Center.

Al principio él comienza a cruzar sin que nadie repare en su hazaña, pero una mujer que sale del metro, mira hacia arriba, y atónita cree ver a un hombre que anda entre el vacío de las dos inmensas torres. Al poco tiempo la calle se llena de gente que señala al cielo incrédula.

La policía no sabía como reaccionar. Petit, saludó a la gente y se acostó un rato sobre el cable como solía hacer en sus shows. 45 minutos después, llegó a la azotea de la otra torre donde se entregó  a la policía que no sabía si aplaudir o esposarle.Here we have few newspapers How the press watch  this incredible event.                                   

As a boy, Philippe Petit dreams of performing daring feats for dazzled crowds. As an adult (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), his life’s ambition comes true when he becomes a high-wire artist who stares death in the face with every step. Under the guidance of mentor Papa Rudy, the French daredevil devises a plan to walk on a tightrope attached to the north and south towers of the World Trade Center. With help from his team and against all odds, Petit attempts the seemingly impossible stunt on Aug. 7, 1974.

Pero lo más impactante de esta proeza, es que no solo Philipppe Petit cruzo en un cable las torres gemelas, si no que está vivo para contarnos personalmente su historia.

Philipppe Petit creyo en sí mismo y se preparo muy bien para esta gran azaña, que ninguna otra persona se ha atrevido a emular.

El poder de soñar y viajar a través de nuestra mentes es algo muy especial, no importa en lo que tu creas, en lo que a ti he haga feliz, pero por sobre toda las cosas cree en ti , lucha por cumplir tus metas y  por hacer tus sueños realidad, busca un equipo que te ayuden en tu trabajo para acercarte cada dia mas a tu meta,  por sobretodo deja un legado en la página de tu vida para que tu nombre sea inmortal para siempre.
