The breathtaking images submitted for the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards

In an Incredible submissions for the 2016 awards, with some of the greatest landscape and wildlife images have be entered into the competition, now in its eighth year contest, It is  open to photographers of all levels with both amateurs and professionals being invited to submit photos ,Eagles battling in the snow, a tiger prowling the long grass of India and an erupting volcano in Chile.

These are some of the stunning images in the running for the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards with many capturing breathtaking shots of mother nature at her finest in the likes of Switzerland and Canada.

One photographer, Z Chen from China, submitted an incredible still of the sunset around Viti, a crater in Iceland that is shaped like a love heart, and another, Amri Arfianto from Indonesia, captured the moment a male peacock spread his tail feathers with eye-popping style.

So far, this year’s ‘open’ category submissions, sent in to the World Photography Organisation, include an extraordinary variety of incredible images of wildlife and some of Earth’s greatest landscapes.

All winning and shortlisted photographers will be included in a global press campaign in London in April 2016 the selected Open Photographer of the Year will also receive $5,000 (£3,260) plus flights and accommodation to the awards.

Launched in 2008, the awards are dedicated to supporting and cultivating photographic culture and are open to photographers of all levels – from amateurs to ‘fully-fledged’ professionals – and winners will be selected in four categories (professional, open, student and youth).

En esta edición de los Premios Sony recibió un récord de 230.103 postulaciones, con imágenes enviadas de 186 países en siete categorías documentales y siete categorías artísticas, así como premios para jóvenes y estudiantes. Los fotógrafos que consigan ser galardonados recibirán premios en metálico y lo último en equipamiento de fotografía digital de Sony.

Desde su lanzamiento en 2007, los Sony World Photography Awards han recibido más de 700.000 imágenes provenientes de 230 países distintos. Con el objetivo de encontrar lo mejor de la fotografía contemporánea internacional, estos premios se han establecido como uno de los concursos de fotografía más importantes del mundo. El ganador más reciente del premio L’Iris d’Or/Fotógrafo del año 2015 fue la fotógrafa americana Sara Naomi Lewkowicz por su serie ‘Shane and Maggie’ un examen íntimo y potente de la violencia doméstica estudiada como un proceso.

Los ganadores de todas las categorías recibirán lo último en equipamiento de fotografía digital de Sony, y el ganador del premio Student Focus recibirá el más nuevo y vanguardista equipamiento de imagen digital de Sony para su Universidad.

El objetivo del concurso Student Focus  es captar una única imagen que simbolice la cultura del consumidor contemporáneo. La imagen puede ser sensacionalista o discreta, pero debe representar algo que el fotógrafo sienta que es un reflejo de la sociedad actual.

Evening Mood at tre Cime di lavaredo

Image was taken in Bali during Melasti Festival. This Festival is conducted once a year in conjunction with Nyepi or Silent Day. These young girls were waiting for their turn to perform. They looked stunning with their bright coloured costumes and heavy make-up on, however the expression on each of the girls’ face especially the yawning girl gives this image an extra ‘ummpph’.

My image refers to a particular circumstance in which the Buddhist monks were walking to the Buddhist Rite(Ceremony) in the heavy snow. It took place in Langmu Temple of China on March 4th(the 15th of the first lunar month), 2015. Langmusi is not just a temple, the small town itself, half of which is in Gansu Province and half in Sichuan Province. Half of the people here are Tibetans and half are Muslims. Buddhist Tangka, Shaidafo is a routine Buddhist ceremony which is held on this day every year.

The Australian Giant Cuttlefish aggregation is truly one of nature’s great events. Thousands of cuttlefish congregate in the shallow waters around the Spencer gulf in South Australia, to mate and perpetuate the species. The cuttlefish like alien beings, display an array of patterns, textures and colours to indicate their intentions. As male courts a female or wards off other males, and entourage of suiters stay poised for an opportunity to mate with the female. A visual delight and a rare glimpse of nature in all its glory.

Arts & Culture – Swee Choo Oh, Malaysia

A country named after a desert. One of the least densely populated places on earth. Defined by its rich variety of colors yet in a forever changing, yet completely barren landscape. Namibia’s landscape draws you in, through a vast brown plain of scorched earth, and steers you over the white surface of a salt pan to finally arrive in the gold tones of the sand dunes. Patience is required to discover the wide range of Namibia’s subtle scenery. It literally takes you hours, driving though nothing, to at long last arrive at…more of nothing. The sight of other people is rare and only the strategically located gas stations are a reminder of the world beyond. This country is in another time zone—time seems to move slower but it feels more logical, somehow. Captivated by these washed out yet delicately colored landscapes, you can drive for hours. Chaperoned by herds of giraffes or zebras, shadowed by flocks of flamingos, suddenly stumbling upon a family of elephants. The animals look up curiously, but soon forget about you and slowly continue their journey, unhurried by your presence, at their own pace. – Maroesjka Lavigne

Alexander Semenov, Russia, Shortlist, Professional Environment, 2016 Sony World Photography Awards) This series represent exploration of the most extreme and far cold-water seas, washing the coasts of Russia, because only few people in the world had chance to dive there. These seas are true pearls of nature, hiding mysteries and treasures not only for divers and scientists – there is another universe with it’s own aliens and fantastic creatures. These strange animals are mostly undescribed. Some of them are tiny, some are hidden because of their complete transparency, some are beautiful and gentle giants – in the underwater world you can find living things for the first time in the history of humanity, but they were there for millions of years. Modern diving and photo equipment give us a chance to reveal this beauty hidden in the dark.

Rong Rong & Inri, the influential photographic husband and wife team who have shaped contemporary photography in China and beyond, will receive the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize at the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards. The photographers are being recognised for both their careers as artists and their significant impact on Asian photography. RongRong & inri’s photography reflects the intimate world that they have created together and pushes the boundaries of traditional black-and-white darkroom techniques. Together they founded China’s first contemporary art space dedicated to the medium, the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, and the 2015 Jimei x Arles Photo Festival in partnership with Les Recontres d’Arles. Chinese photographer RongRong and Japanese artist inri will be presented with their award in London on 21 April 2016, at the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards ceremony.  In celebration of the award, a special exhibition of RongRong & inri’s current and past work curated by Zelda Cheatle will be shown at Somerset House, London from 22 April to 8 May 2016, as part of the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition. It will be the first time so many of the photographers’ works have been brought together outside of Asia and will include the European premiere of new works from their latest, critically acclaimed series, Tsumari Story.

My experience in the exhibition

One more year the city of London has the privilege of hosting the exhibition of Sony World Photography Awards I have high expectations and I had waited for two months to be coming to this exhibition , with the company of my good friend Elena we arrived at the exhibition is breathtaking to contemplate a gigantic amount of photography’s  in more than one  occasions we had to take a break and sit dawn to rest, during our walk through the museum we could see right through the eye different photographers realities in some case were beautiful, shocking, very dramatic, everyday life people routine, some pictures were just incomprehensible, strange, how life in many cases can be …sometime was difficult to understand what the author means, in other photos reality was so hard and strong that it hurt the soul so much, the human eye had  caught through the camara that moment of grief and incomprehension, after seeing so many different realities and travel the world through many scenarios… I and my friend gave thanks for having what we have, the exhibition is composed to develop a great desire or even awake our passion for photography, in this article I wanted to capture the moment when the audience watched the photos and as you can see in all of them there is a second of meditation to contemplate the artist’s work.

Why we take pictures …? because life is an instant.. one second after second and the camera freezes the time to help to preserve and revive through the picture that instant of part of life…

I think the best shot for me were the last two in which we were seating in the courtyard of the building of Somerset watching people to relax, It was a warm sunny day of spring and joyful children were playing with the water of the fountain worry less of any uncertain future were motivated for their own happiness and joy…

Mi experiencia en la exposición

un ano mas la ciudad de Londres tiene el privilegio de acoger la exposición de Sony World Photography Awards tenía muchas expectativas y la había esperado por dos meses que se presentara, con la compañía de mi buena amiga Elena llegamos a la exposición que es sin duda  gigantesca en varias oportunidades tuvimos que tomar un descanso y sentarnos, durante nuestro paseo por el museo pudimos ver atravez del ojo del fotógrafo diferentes realidades en algunos caso eran hermosas, impactantes, muy crudas, de la vida cotidiana , incomprensibles, extrañas, en muchos casos era difícil comprender que quiso decir el autor, en otras fotos la realidad era tan dura y fuerte que te dolía el alma el ojo de la cámara había capturado ese momento de pena e incomprensión, después de tanto ver diferentes realidades y viajar por el mundo atreves de muchos escenarios yo y mi amiga dimos gracias por tener lo que tenemos, la exposición está compuesta para intensivar el gran deseo o incluso despertar la pasión por la fotografía, en este articulo quise capturar el instante en que el publico observaba las fotos y como pueden ver en todos ellos existe un segundo de meditación al contemplar la obra del artista.

Por que sacamos fotos…? por que la vida es un instante un segundo tras segundo y la cámara congela ese momento para ayudarnos a preservarlo y poder revivirlo a través de la foto.

Creo que la mejor foto para mi fueron las dos últimas en que en el patio del edificio de Somerset la gente se relajaba la fuente daba el frescor de un día de sol de primavera y los niños alegres despreocupados de un futuro incierto se dejaban llevar por el momento y simplemente ser felices.

La segunda  foto es la mía con Elena por que fue una tarde maravillosa en que dos amigas de muchos años se unieron por un momento para marcar historia dentro del recuerdo de nuestras vidas, mis amigos de Positive Diva la vida puede ser hermosa vive cada día con felicidad agradece lo que tienes y ama intensamente.

      

The second my favourite photo is mine with Elena because it was a wonderful afternoon that two friends of many years joined for a moment to make history in the memory of our lives, my Positive Diva friend’s life can be beautiful lives every day with thanks and happiness love intensely.
